What is this rule of thirds?

Basically, it’s a rule of the thumb designed to help you compose powerful images. As with most rules in photography, it is important to learn it, understand it, and make it your friend, before you start breaking it. The biggest argument is that once you know what conventionally creates a strong photograph, you can make informed decisions as to how you can adapt and bend the rules to create even stronger compositions.

Please post 3 examples using “Rule of Thirds”.

Here are my Rule of Two Thirds pictures. I have to admit I wasn't convinced about this one, but I can see how it takes ordinary subjects and makes the pictures abit stronger. These were ordinary items out in my mum's garden!! I'm now converted!!!!

Here are my attempts at utilising the 'Rule of Thirds' ... I'm not really sure if they satisfy the brief ...

A view across Sywell Reservoir, the aim was that the tree in the foreground was covered by both left hand grid points and the horizon water line is along the line of the upper third of the grid.

Simple picture of Rob, again at Sywell, it was a bit of a grey and wet morning on Sunday!
I aimed to get Rob's right eye in the region of the top right point of the grid.

Finally, a bouquet of flowers with the aim of having the rose covering the lower left point of the grid.

Some really nice examples of using the rule of thirds here. The only one that maybe needs slight adjustment is the tree, try next time to move to the right slightly so that the trunk is on the third lines.

Thanks for the feedback Bridget ... that shot was the hardest for me to decide how to frame it. I was happy with the horizon line but placed the lower left grid point closer to the forked branch of the tree than on the trunk.

I have a tendency to put trunks along the edge of a shot so I did venture into unexplored territory slightly :)

A prime example of previous efforts ....
